There are many templates in use on the Monster High Wiki, some common to all wikis, some unique to this one. All templates available can be found in Category:Templates, categorized into the various subcategories.

If a user has an idea for a new template, they are to contact an admin to create one. Users who have extensive knowledge of templates and a clear vision on the proposed new template may create one on their own, but asking permission and/or feedback beforehand is recommended. The same rules apply to editing existing templates, with the added note that vandalism of templates results in a ban.

What are templates?

For Help:Templates, see Templates (disambiguation).

Wiki templates are pieces of code that are given their own page. Every other page can be made to refer to one or more templates, which results in the pages acting as if the templates' coding exists within them too. For instance, the template {{infoleak}} contains code that displays a warning that info on 'this' page is from a leak. Any page for which this warning is relevant can simply have {{infoleak}} placed on top and the complex coding of the template is displayed. Templates can also be interactive if they are dependent of parameters, as is the case with most infoboxes. Wiki templates provide a means to insert the same content over and over across the wiki. This saves editors the hassle of duplicating the same text again and again, and also helps ensure consistency.

Templates are generally shown with the format required to use the template (e.g. {{stub}}). Clicking the template name takes you to the template's page, where you can see what it looks like and how it is used.

Detailed instructions on the usage of each template should exist on:

  1. either a subpage using {{documentation}};
  2. or the template page itself (inside "noinclude" tags).

For more information on templates, see Help:Templates.

Rules regarding templates

For Monster High Wiki:Haunted house rules, see Templates (disambiguation).
  1. Don't touch if you don't understand.
  2. Speak to an admin if you have a suggestion for a template, whether an old or new one.
  3. If you change something crucial about a template, like the name of a parameter, you are responsible for updating the template on every page that carries it. These pages can be found with the "What links here" function.

General templates

Article management templates

{{delete}}

{{disambig}}

  • If you have several articles that have similar or identical names, you may wish to create a "disambiguation" page at the main article name, with the articles taking an extra phrase in brackets afterwards. For example:
Gloom Beach <-- disambiguation page, with links to:
Gloom Beach (location)
Gloom Beach (doll assortment)

{{stub}}

  • When a page has little or no useful information, then it is likely a stub. This template will include them in Category:Article stubs, and is used to list which articles need expanding.
  • For more information, see Help:Stubs.

Category templates

{{category}}

  • This can be added to categories to add general categorising details. Use in cases where it may be useful to point out to users how to categorise, such as popular categories.

{{templatecategory}}

  • This should be added to any template-related categories, to list template-specific categorising details, which differ from those of normal pages.

General wiki templates

{{clr}}, plus {{clrl}} and {{clrr}}

  • This template is used to reduce the amount of non-wikicode used on pages, replacing the code <br style="clear:both;" />. Its use should generally be avoided.
  • You can use {{clr}} instead of the HTML tag that clears space below things like images, pictures and tables, so the following stuff doesn't begin until the bottom of the image, picture or table box.
  • You can also use {{clrl}} or {{clrr}} to clear only left or right floats.

{{main|<main article>}}

  • Use at the start of a section to link to the main article on it.

{{tocright}}

  • This template floats the table of contents (toc) on the right. It should only be used when absolutely necessary, to keep consistent design.

{{sandbox}}

{{t|<template>}}

  • This template allows you to show example template code (with a link to the templates) without using the template itself. It is used extensively on this page.

{{welcomeIP}} and {{welcome}}

  • The first is to welcome new non-vandalistic contributors who are "anonymous", identified only by their IP number; it encourages them to register.
  • The second template is for welcoming new registered users. Should be customized for the wiki, indicating the pages we most want newcomers to visit.
  • The above two templates are very suitable for having "subst:" prefixed, because they can be edited with additions or deletions appropriate to the apparent strengths of the person being welcomed; e.g. if the contributor has already demonstrated good wiki editing skills you could delete references to pages about "how to edit".

Monster High Wiki templates

Doll log templates

Most doll log information goes on the doll logs page and subpages. Some doll log information goes on separate pages, such as the Gloom Beach messages. The remaining entries, often booklets such as diaries, are too big for inclusion on one page together. If these booklets are part of a series, then they are to be bound together with a doll log template.

Infoboxes

On the Monster High Wiki, a lot of pages require an infobox template to finish up the layout. The types of pages that needs ones are ones about characters that have profiles published, pets, doll assortments, books, webisodes, TV specials, voice actors, people involved in the making of the "Fright Song" music video, and Mattel employees.

Layout templates

There are a few templates available that are made to deal with repetitive content on individual pages. A use may be found for these layout templates outside those pages, but they are made to serve the needs of one specific page only.

Leak templates

There are two templates listed as leak templates. The first, HeadingC, is for placement on the main page whenever a leak occurs and the wiki does not want any contributions related to it. The second, infoleak, is for placement on articles that are allowed only so the admins can regulate contributions on a leak (for instance in case of constant recreation of pages on leaked information).
